Service Learning

Karate World in Surfside Beach, South Carolina firmly believes in the empowerment and conscientiousness of community involvement. Working together brings forth good deeds and creates strong hearts. Our students are encouraged to participate in charitable contributions, service, and volunteerism through our Service Learning events. We are often actively involved in several community service endeavors throughout the year.

Beach Sweeps

Our oceans and waterways are very important to the well being of Earth’s ecosystems, our health, and our environment. Tourists come from all over the World to visit South Carolina’s beautiful beaches.

Beach clean-ups help keep our beaches in good condition. Cleaning up our coasts also helps to protect local wildlife from ingesting trash or getting trapped in debris. Too often we see plastic straws, cigarette butts, plastic bottle caps, firework tubes, plastic bags, and wrappers of all kinds on our beaches. The careless members of the public and tourist crowds at the beaches are responsible for the pollution and debris that wash into the ocean. Even trash littering the streets ends up washing into our river systems, and then straight to the ocean. There is already a terrible area twice the size of Texas that is a huge garbage patch floating in the Pacific Ocean!

At Karate World, we love our local beaches and want to keep them clean for our children and future generations, Participation in beach clean-ups is essential to protecting this wonderful resource.

Several times a year we assemble groups to perform volunteer clean-ups on area beaches, waterways, and other community areas. We may work with S.C. Sea Grant Consortium, S.C. Department of Natural Resources, Keep Horry County Beautiful, Waccamaw Riverkeeper, and Surfrider Grand Strand, as well as The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup which involves several hundred-thousand volunteers in over 75 nations.

Break-A-Thon Fundraising Events

Karate World encourages charity, service, and volunteerism. Working together brings forth good deeds and strong hearts.

Periodically, we will plan fundraising Break-A-Thons to benefit causes and charities that help kids and families, veterans, the hungry, or to support finding cures.

A Break-A-Thon is an event in which we seek out sponsors and our students collect pledges to break boards. The events are a lot of fun for the participants and of great benefit to the community and the sponsored charity. The boards and other materials are often donated by local businesses and supporters, as well as the event venue and the volunteers assisting with the event. We also invite local businesses to share bounce houses, face painting, musical entertainment, raffles, games like corn hole, as well as area food and beverage providers.

So let’s get crackin’! Please check out our website, our calendar, and our social media pages regularly to find out then the next fundraising event is. You could also sign up to receive our monthly newsletter.

Clothing & Shoe Drives

There are almost 5000 children in South Carolina that are in foster care. The primary purpose of foster care service is to provide a safe temporary placement for children who cannot remain safely in the home of their parent(s), or who have lost their parents and have no other family.

Karate World supports nonprofit organizations that provide goods and services to children residing in the foster care system in Horry, Georgetown, Marion, and Dillon counties in South Carolina. The goal is to ensure that each of these children is given new or gently worn clothing, shoes, toys, and hygiene items upon entering care. By helping to support the foster families we can relieve some of the burden they assume when they welcome a child into their home and hearts.

Foster children are not the only youth that we collect donations for. In 2014, it was reported that at least 27 percent of all the children in South Carolina are living in poverty. Therefore, we also hold collection drives for children who need materials for school such as classroom supplies and backpacks. Periodically we collect shoes and clothing for area needy children living at or near the poverty level. Many families are only one paycheck from needing help at any moment. Karate World tries to do our part in offering assistance to those in need whenever possible.

Food Drives

Many people are struggling to pay for utilities or to buy food. One in four children under the age of 5 goes to bed hungry in South Carolina every night. According to the KIDS Count Project, South Carolina comes in at 45th in the nation in regards to child well-being.

Many citizens do not make enough at their jobs or via Social Security retirement to buy food – the food banks help them. Karate World periodically supports local Food Drives to collect canned goods and other non-perishable food items for needy families in our local area. Food drives help raise awareness of hunger in our community. While we collect food for people in need, we play an essential role in the fight against hunger.

Non-perishable donations that last the longest are often best. Food items such canned tuna, cereals, boxed pasta, peanut butter, canned fruits, and dried or canned vegetables can be stored and transported to food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the area. The collected items are also distributed around the community via the Myrtle Beach Christian Mission Outreach and Meals On Wheels at Shepherd Of The Sea Church in Garden City.

Helping others in the community improves our neighborhoods and strengthens our character and compassion. Please check out our website, our calendar, and our social media pages regularly to find out when the food drive event is. You could also sign up to receive our monthly newsletter.

Honor Roll Reward Program

Karate World encourages students to do their best. Each year we participate in incentive programs for star students. Area schools are offered specials to offer to their honor roll students, and students enrolled at Karate World can earn stars to put onto their Gis.

Muscular Dystrophy Lock-Up Event Fundraisers

Karate World’s chief Instructor and Owner, Jason McCormick, has done some time in the lock-up.

Horry County residents, community leaders, business owners, and their employees go under “lock and key” to raise money for people affected by Muscular Dystrophy.

The MDA Lock-up is a lighthearted community event geared to raising donations to help children and adults with MD, and to fundraise for research in curing muscular dystrophy and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). These events also raise money to send children to MDA summer camp where they can enjoy horseback riding, swimming, football, crafts, and many more activities designed specifically for them.

MDA jail birds volunteer to raise “bail money” from family, friends, and the community – while being locked up for an hour in the “Maximum-Appreciation Facility” to benefit the Coastal Carolina Chapter of the MDA.

Would you like to catch the next time Jason gets put behind bars? Please check out our website, our calendar, and our social media pages regularly to find out when the next lock-up event is. You could also sign up to receive our monthly newsletter.

Teacher Appreciation Program

Teachers across the state are feeling the impacts of education budget cuts. These cuts have directly impacted teachers’ ability to outfit their classrooms with necessary materials and supplies.

Teachers often must look into their own pockets to help supply the essentials that are necessary to start off the school year.

Karate World provides students the opportunity to help by collecting supplies for their own teachers. Items such as hand sanitizer, tissues, and pencils are the most requested items – but we will also provide them with a sweet treat of donuts as well!

Want to help a teacher too? Please check out our website, our calendar, and our social media pages regularly to find out when the next collection takes place. You could also sign up to receive our monthly newsletter.

Toy Collection Drives

Karate World in Surfside Beach helps to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year – and distributes the toys through local volunteer groups and churches to needy children in the area community.

The objective is to help less fortunate children experience the joy of the holidays and to assist in the positive development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children.

Karate World participates in the annual toy collection and distribution campaign, and contributes to improve local communities into the future. Spreading a message of hope to the less fortunate youngsters will assist them in growing into responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens.
