May Is National Water Safety Month: Care To Be Aware

We want you to enjoy the warm months of Summer. Please use common sense precautions to enjoy our local pools, beaches, and rivers safely.



Kids: Please practice Safety First when having fun near water. 

  • Always swim in designated “safe” areas under the supervision of a lifeguard or a responsible adult!
  • Never swim alone (even if there’s a lifeguard) – always swim with a friend.
  • Learn to swim! You may enroll in a Red Cross or other swimming class.
  • The area around pool surfaces are almost always wet and therefore slippery. They are most often made of concrete or some other hard material such as wooden decking. It is for this reason that you should never run, always walk so that you don’t slip and fall, injuring yourself or others.
  • Avoid the pool drains as they can suck weaker swimmers down, making it difficult to resurface.


Parents: Please become knowledgeable about the following safety measures during National Water Safety Month

  • Do not be distracted when children are in, or near the pool. Activities such as reading, phone use, talking to others, and other distractions should be avoided whenever children are present. Be close enough to reach the children at all times.
  • Instruct all children to use the buddy system and to always have one or more friends around with them near the pool that can watch, help, call someone, or run for help if needed.
  • Using life jackets can greatly reduce the risk of drowning. Floating rafts or air-filled toys are not safety devices! Never rely on “water wings”, or pool “noodles” without close supervision. These are toys and not life life preservers.

Learn how to perform Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), adult CPR, and general First Aid. Every second counts in an emergency and the faster that CPR is started increases the chance of an improved outcome. During the time it can take for paramedics to arrive, your CPR skills could save a life.
  • Schedule swimming lessons for your children and encourage all of your neighbors with kids to do the same. However, even when children are formally taught to swim they still require close supervision.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages while supervising children.
  • Be aware of the health of your family and friends who visit. If a friend or family member has a seizure disorder, stronger supervision needs to be provided when around water. The onset of a seizure while in the swimming pool can be dangerous. Everyone needs to be prepared.
  • Be alert of any exposed suction outlets or pool drains, as they can be seriously dangerous to children as well as adults. All drains shall be protected by an approved cover and if any cover is broken, loose, or missing – the pool, spa, or hot tub must be immediately closed.
  • On a boat, in a lake, or enjoying the lake or the beach, have children wear a life jacket that fits them, and watch them closely around water – they can go under water quickly and quietly.
  • Tell your children about the dangers of open water. Even in knee-deep water – currents can carry even strong swimmers away from the shore in oceans or large lakes.
  • Always know where your child is, who they are with, and when they are expected home if they are with others.
